"My maternal ancestors are descendants of the Ancestiral Purebloans, who were originally descendants from the Oshara tradition by way of the "Picosa" culture dating back to about 7000BC. Some ventually moved to San Ildefinso Pueblo, New Mexico (Po-woh-ge-oweenge) near the Rio Grande to utilize gravitational irrigation methods. My grandmother, who was raised there, would tell us stories of her aunt Maira "the Potter" Martinez (Po've'ka) and her creation of black-on-black pottery. While I have very little memory of visiting and living at San Ildefonso Pueblo as a young child, Maria and many relatives have been part of a greater reconnection to my indigenous roots."
